¿Cómo llegaste a ser productora/ingeniera de sonido?

Inicialmente fui a la escuela de música para estudiar interpretación de violín, pero a la mitad de mi primer semestre me diagnosticaron distonía focal y ¡perdí el uso de mi dedo índice izquierdo! Decidí girar hacia la producción de aprendizaje ya que no requería diez dedos de trabajo.

¿Qué consejo les daría a los estudiantes que van a la escuela o que acaban de graduarse acerca de conseguir un trabajo en esta industria?

¡Confía en tus instintos! Ya sea que se trate de una persona, un proyecto o una decisión artística, puede confiar en su instinto para tomar la mejor decisión. Toma decisiones con audacia y no dudes de ti mismo, y te encontrarás rodeado de personas y proyectos que ama.

¿Cuáles son las principales cualidades requeridas para ser un buen ingeniero de sonido en tu opinión?

¡Creatividad, atención al detalle sin perder de vista el panorama general y comunicación! Creo que, para ser un buen ingeniero de sonido, solo necesitas replicar lo que te enseñaron o lo que viste hacer a otra persona, pero para ser un gran ingeniero de sonido, debes tomar riesgos por el bien de la canción. Es por eso que la comunicación es tan importante: ¡alinear la visión le dirá exactamente qué riesgos tomar! En mi opinión, una buena ingeniería implica más que solo obtener una grabación limpia, y asumir esos riesgos elevará el registro.

¿Cuál es tu filosofía de grabación/producción?

Mi filosofía es que las mejores pistas (¡y las decisiones para hacerlas!) surgen naturalmente. Si está pensando demasiado en ello, eso se reflejará en el producto final. Deje que la pista le hable y guíe sus decisiones a partir de ahí, y deberían ser fáciles.

¿Qué productores/ingenieros te inspiran/te inspiraron?

Estoy súper inspirada por tantas productoras/ingenieras que lo están arrasando por completo: SoWylie, Bad Snacks, Pom Pom, Tiger Darrow, Kesha Lee, Emily Lazaar, Piper Payne, etc., pero también algunas de las productoras/ingenieras que siento que he aprendido mucho simplemente escuchando sus discos. Andy Williams (Relient K – Forget And Not Slow Down), Benny Blanco & Cashmere Cat (Ariana Grande & Cashmere Cat – Adore), Charlie Puth (Charlie Puth – Voicenotes) son algunos de mis favoritos.

How did you get into music production?
When I first went to music school, I thought that I was going to study violin performance. In the middle of my first semester, one of my fingers kind of stopped working and I was diagnosed with focal dystonia. In that moment, I turned to music production – you don’t need all ten fingers to work as producer.
What advice would you give to students that still go to school or have just graduated about getting a job in this industry?
Trust your instincts! Wether it´s a person, a project or an artistic decision, you can trust your instincts to make the best decision. Make bold decisions and don´t doubt about yourself, so you´ll find yourself surrounded by people and projects you love.
What are the main qualities required to be a good sound engineer in your opinion?
Creativity, attention to detail without losing sight of the big picture and communication! I think that to be a good sound engineer you just need to replicate what you were taught or what you saw someone else does, but for being a great sound engineer, you have to take risks for the sake of the song. This is why communication is so important: Aligning the vision will tell you exactly what risks to take! In my opinion, there is more to good engineering than just getting a clean recording, and taking those risks will elevate the record.
What is your recording/production philosophy?
My philosophy is that the best tracks (and the decisions to make them!) come naturally. If you’re thinking too much about it, that will show in the final product. Let the track speak to you and guide your decisions from there, and it should be easy.
What producers/engineers have inspired you?
I’m super inspired by so many female producers/engineers who are completely killing it: SoWylie, Bad Snacks, Pom Pom, Tiger Darrow, Kesha Lee, Emily Lazaar, Piper Payne, etc., but also by some of the producers/engineers that I feel like I’ve learned a lot just by listening to their records. Andy Williams (Relient K – Forget And Not Slow Down), Benny Blanco & Cashmere Cat (Ariana Grande & Cashmere Cat – Adore), Charlie Puth (Charlie Puth – Voicenotes) are some of my favorites.
